The County of Maui held a blessing today for a roundabout planned for installation at the Piikea-Liloa Drive intersection in South Maui.  The junction will replace the current four-way stop, allowing continuous movement of traffic in one direction around a central island.

Groundbreaking on the Kihei Roundabout is set to begin on Monday, August 1, 2011.

The roundabout, once complete will become a part of the Kihei Bikeway and is designed to improve traffic and pedestrian safety in the area.

The roundabout project is estimated to cost $1.9 million and will take about 270 days to complete.

Editor’s Note: The county has since revised the completion timeline to 394 days as of 8/8/2011.
