Maui police continue a criminal investigation involving the recovery of a body near Nakalele Point last night.

Police responded to an initial report of a domestic dispute at 6:27 p.m. on Thursday, September 1, 2011 along the Kahekili Highway near mile marker 37.

During their response, officers reported finding the body of an unknown, unresponsive female at about 7:28 p.m.

Upon arrival on scene and attempting to contact a male observed in the area, authorities say he fled and jumped off a cliff and into the ocean, according to the MPD’s Lt. Wayne Ibarra.

The Maui Fire Department and US Coast Guard were contacted and responded to assist in rescuing the male.  Attempts to retrieve the male from the ocean continued into the late evening.

At about 6:45 this morning, officers were airlifted by helicopter to the rock point at Nakalele, where the male was at, and were able to secure him and take him into custody.

The male individual reportedly sustained possible non-life threatening injuries, and was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

A criminal investigation is ongoing.

Maui Police have concluded on-scene operations of a criminal investigation near Nakalele Point in West Maui. Crews from the Maui Police Department reportedly responded to the incident at around 6:35 p.m., on Thursday, September 1, 2011.

Authorities had established the area as a crime scene and remained at the location overnight where a male individual was being sought.

Crews from the US Coast Guard, Hawai’i were called to respond at 8:10 p.m. to assist in locating a man who had jumped into the waters at Nakalele Point, between Kapalua and Kahakuloa. The agency responded with an MH-65 Helicopter from Air Station Barbers Point as well as a 45-foot response boat from Maui.

The Maui Fire Department was also called to assist.
