Marty Dread and Omar and the Soultones in Kihei
By Kristin Hashimoto
Four time Na Hoku Hanohano nominee, Martin Charles Hennessey, also known as, Marty Dread will be doing his reggae and hip hop/dance music best at the Kihei Community Center on September 25, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Soulful tunes, positive vibes, and musical collaborations have marked Dread’s decades long career.
Back in the day of cassette tapes, Dread made a name for himself in the early 90s with the single “Wicked Wahine.” Since that time, Dread created his own record label, Five Corners Music, and turned out song after song, culminating in a greatest hits CD spanning 10 years of music titled “The Hits,” in 2003.
Omar and the Soultones will open for Dread at the community center on Lipoa Street. Admission is $20, and will benefit the Unity Church of Maui. The audience is encouraged to dance and let the good vibes infuse their souls. For more information, call 242-9327. The community center is located at 303 East Lipoa Street in Kihei.
