Haiku Man Dies of Injuries from Moped Crash

A Haiku man injured in a single-vehicle moped crash in Paia last month, has since died of injuries sustained in the accident.

Authorities have since identified the man as 58-year-old Ricky C. Hughes.

According to police reports, Hughes was traveling west on the Hana Highway at around 3:20 p.m. on Friday, September 23, when he lost control of the moped he was driving.

Maui police say the vehicle veered into the right shoulder and collided with a metal guard rail just west of Kaiholo Place in Paia.

Hughes, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered critical injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

Authorities say he died on Saturday, October 8, 2011 of injuries sustained in the crash.

The accident was the 17th traffic related fatality on Maui County roads this year compared to 10 at the same time last year.
