A brush fire on Maui on Thursday afternoon consumed a quarter-acre and caused $3,000 in losses at Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company before being brought under control.

The fire was reported at 1:26 p.m., and was under control by 1:56 p.m.

Fire officials say the fire started on Pulehu Road, one mile up from the Hana Highway, then spread to into an HC&S cane field.

Crews from HC&S also responded with two tankers, and were left to extinguish the fire after county crews brought the blaze under control.
