The state and the county have taken a special interest in energy reduction at Maui restaurants and are sponsoring a free-day workshop series and energy consumption survey.

Maui Economic Development Board, Inc. (MEDB) in collaboration with the County of Maui and the Hawaii Technology Development Corporation’s Manufacturing Extension Program (HTDC-MEP) have developed the workshop series and hope to deliver information on energy reduction methods that if implemented will lower operational costs for Maui restaurants.

Restaurants owners are also being encouraged to participate in the “Maui Restaurants: Energy Consumption Survey.” MEDB and HTDC-MEP are hoping that the answers provided to the survey will help them to create a more practical and targeted workshop experience. Responses are encouraged by the deadline of Friday, December 9. The information provided in the survey will only be used for statistical purposes, with no mention of specific answers provided.

The free two-day workshop series is entitled “Curbing Your Energy Diet.” The goal of workshop is to provide restaurant owners, managers and engineering staff with information, tools and strategies that can increase energy efficiency in restaurants. In particular, refrigeration and freezing, lighting, cooling, and energy “vampires” (computers, satellite/cable boxes, phone chargers) will be covered. Funding and incentive options will also be discussed.

The workshops will be presented on Wednesday, December 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Three’s Bar & Grill in Kihei, and the second day workshop will be on Friday, December 16th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the MEDB Malcolm Center in the Tech Park in Kihei.
