UH Football Team to Face “Challenging Schedule” in 2012 MWC
As it stands, the University of Hawaii football team will play half of its 2012 football schedule on the road according to the Mountain West Conference schedule released on Friday. UH currently has 12 games scheduled this season, however, there is still a possibility for a 13th game.
“Now that the Mountain West schedule is out, we’ll see if there are any teams interested in coming to Hawaii on either of our two open dates” UH Athletics Director Jim Donovan said. “We’ll schedule them as long as we can reach a reasonable deal, but if not, we’ll play a 12-game schedule. I don’t want to play a seventh road game.”
In addition to the already announced non-conference games, the Warriors will host four league games and play four conference games on the road. In all, Hawaii will currently play six home games and six road games and have two open dates.
“It’s awfully exciting yet it will be a very challenging schedule,” head coach Norm Chow said. “The conference is such that we don’t have to travel too far but it is still very difficult and that’s what we expected now that we’ve moved to the next level. I told our players about it this morning and they were fired up and excited to get this thing started.”
UH opens the 2012 season with a non-conference road game at USC, Sept. 1, at the Coliseum in Los Angeles. Following a bye week, the Warriors host Lamar, Sept. 15, in the home opener at Aloha Stadium, before playing their first Mountain West game against Nevada, Sept. 22, in Honolulu.
Hawaii then plays another non-conference road game at Brigham Young, Sept. 29, before beginning a eight-week stretch of seven MWC contests. The Warriors play at San Diego State, Oct. 6, then returns to Aloha Stadium to host New Mexico, Oct. 13.
Following its second open week, UH plays another set of back-to-back road games at Colorado State, Oct. 27 and at Fresno State, Nov. 3 before returning to host Boise State, Nov. 10. The Warriors will play their final road game at Air Force, Nov. 17, then closes out the MW slate with a home game against UNLV, Nov. 24.
Hawaii concludes the regular season with a non-conference game against South Alabama, Dec. 1.
The conference will announce kickoff times and TV games in a final version of the schedule which will be released in the coming weeks.
