2012 Da Kidney Da Kine Day, April 28
By Wendy Osher
The annual Da Kidney Da Kine Day takes place this Saturday, April 28, at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center in Kahului.
The event comes as news surfaced this week of an 11-year-old Lahaina girl who is in need of a life-saving double kidney transplant. Experts say kidney disease is something that afflicts one in seven Maui residents.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features free screenings for kidney disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. The screenings include height and weight analysis, blood pressure testing, blood glucose testing, urinalysis, and an exit interview with a clinician.
There will also be exhibits and displays, as well as live entertainment featuring Jimmy Mac and the Kool Kats, Na Keiki O Halau Hula Kauluokala under the direction of Kumu Uluwehi Guerrero, and Nuff Sedd.
The event is presented by Farmers Insurance Hawai’i, along with the support of the National Kidney Foundation, the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center, the Lions Clubs of Maui, and the University of Hawaii Maui College.
