Kanemitsu Bakery Issued $90,000 Health Dept. Fine

The popular Kanemitsu Bakery on Molokai, known for its famous sweet bread, was issued a $90,000 fine from the state Department of Health.
The alleged violations occurred between March 7 and 8, 2012, when an inspection uncovered “serious deficiencies in the maintenance and manufacturing practices conducted at the facility.”
The bakery produces baked goods and other food products that are manufactured and distributed statewide under the Kanemitsu Bakery brand.
The citation included allegations of unsanitary conditions for improper cleaning of cooking implements and surfaces, inadequate control of rodents, and lack of hot water, according to the state DOH.
On March 9, the health department determined that the bakery had successfully corrected its major violations and has since been allowed to continue its business.
The bakery is being required to address remaining deficiencies and develop a maintenance plan to ensure such conditions do not reoccur. No illnesses related to the consumption of food from the facility have been reported.
DOH officials say Kanemitsu Bakery Inc. was subjected to an enforcement action in August 2000 for similar conditions.
Inspectors from the department of health conduct checks of establishments statewide where food products are prepared, manufactured, distributed, or sold. Programs also investigate complaints and collect samples for laboratory testing to determine compliance with standards.
