Makawao Forest Reserve Reopens After Fire
By Wendy Osher
The Makawao Forest Reserve, which has been closed since Monday due to a brush fire, reopens today. The reserve was the site of a fire that burned 10 acres over four days.
State officials issued a reminder to the public, to practice fire safety this summer by extinguishing cigarettes, using camping stoves properly to avoid starting ground fires, and report any sign of a fire promptly.
The state also reopened the Kula Forest Reserve and Polipoli State Park earlier this week after high winds downed trees, posing a safety concern in the area.
Forestry crews say that although the road is passable and open to the public, trails at both locations will remain closed until further notice.
Once each trail is cleared of debris, they will reopen one-by-one as work is completed.
