Hawaii Coffee Association Cupping on Maui
By Sonia Isotov
The Hawaii Coffee Association’s annual conference will be held July 19 to July 21 at the Maui Tropical Plantation in Waikapu.
Compelling coffee growing and roasting workshops, a prestigious cupping competition, farm tours and the election of officers are all part of the 17th Annual Hawaii Coffee Association’s (HCA) Conference and Trade Show.
HCA’s 4th Statewide Cupping Contest features more than 177 entries vying for the coveted Grand Champions of Hawaiian Coffee in two categories: commercial and creative. The Cupping Competition is open to all coffees grown 100% in the Hawaiian Islands from a recognized Hawaiian growing region. Top coffees from each of Hawaii’s diverse growing origins will also be recognized.
A panel of top industry cuppers will recognize the top finishers in each certification district. Coffees from different regions will be compared and receive a descriptive analysis from professional and certified cuppers to use in describing and promoting individual coffees.
Business reporter Howard Dicus of Hawaii News Now will serve as the keynote speaker for the awards dinner July 21. The conference is open to the public and geared for both farmers and coffee enthusiasts. Visit www.hawaiicoffeeassoc.org for full schedule of events and registration details.
