Elderly Pedestrian Dies After Struck by Truck Tractor in Wailuku

An elderly man died after being struck by a commercial truck tractor while walking in a crosswalk on Eha Street in Wailuku this morning.
Police have since identified the pedestrian as 87-year-old Bomani Kim of Wailuku.
The accident was reported at around 6:44 a.m. on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at the Eha/Waena Street intersection near the Iao Parkside Apartments and the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center.
According to police reports, a yellow 2000 Kenworth commercial truck tractor (bobcat/no trailer), was traveling northwest on Waena Street when the operator failed to stop at a posted stop sign, and executed a right turn onto Eha Street.
Police say the truck tractor struck and ran over Kim, who was walking southwest within a marked crosswalk.
Authorities say Kim died at the crash scene.
According to police reports, the individual operating the truck tractor was 44-years-old and from Makawao.
This is Maui County’s 16th traffic fatality of 2012 compared to seven at the same time last year.

Maui police are investigating a fatal traffic accident that forced the closure of Eha Street in Wailuku for a couple of hours this morning.
The accident was reported at around 7 a.m. on Eha Street between Imikala and Waena Streets.
The road was reopened and the accident was cleared from the roadway by 9:25 a.m.
Police are compiling a report, and are expected to release details later today.
