A structure fire overnight caused an estimated $7,000 damage to a Kahului home.
The incident was reported at 2:26 a.m. at 656 South Papa Avenue in Central Maui.
The incident was reported by a police officer driving a patrol car past the home.
The patrol officer evacuated all 12 occupants of the home who were asleep at the time, and utilized his fire extinguisher to control the fire until backup arrived, officials said.
Upon arrival at 2:30 a.m., fire units observed light smoke and fire coming from the two story home, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
An investigation determined that a pot was left on the stove, which caused a small fire to the kitchen and living room, located on the first floor, Mainaga said.
According to incident reports, crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to the second floor.
No one was injured and none required medical assistance.
