A 15-year-old Maui boy was transported to hospital in critical condition after crashing on a dirt bike earlier in the day.
Maui County Paramedics Association spokesperson Ryan Joslin said, upon arrival at a Paia residence at 12:38 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, crews from Medic 2 out of Makawao found the patient unresponsive and under the care of Paia firefighters from Engine 2.
Per witness statements on scene, authorities were told that the teen was operating a dirt bike earlier in the day and crashed. The teen had reportedly lost consciousness at the crash site for a few seconds, then regained consciousness and drove to the Paia residence where he was found, said Joslin.
According to Joslin, the teen became unresponsive shortly after arriving at the home, at which point EMS was activated.
The patient was transported in critical condition to an awaiting trauma team at Maui Memorial Medical Center while receiving Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support from an attending paramedic while in route, authorities said.
It is unknown if the patient was wearing a helmet at the time of his crash.
