Governor Neil Abercrombie this afternoon will make an announcement regarding the lieutenant governor vacancy created by the departure of Brian Schatz.
Schatz was selected yesterday to fill the vacancy left by the recent passing of US Sen. Daniel K. Inouye and was sworn in this morning as Hawaiʻi’s newest US senator.
The lieutenant governor position is being considered by Senate President Shan Tsutsui of Maui, who is next in line of succession for the job. In a statement issued on Wednesday afternoon, Tsutsui said he plans to discuss the prospect with the governor and his family before making a decision.
The governor’s announcement will be made at 3:30 p.m. at the Executive Office, Ceremonial Room.
