Twenty teachers from Maui County earned National Board certification this year.

They were among the 65 teachers across the state who earned new certification this year, adding to the ranks of 343 other Hawaii teachers who are already board certified.

National Board-certified teachers earn the recognition by successfully meeting rigorous standards through performance based assessments, completion of written exercises, and understanding of how to teach the subject to their students.

In addition, five Maui teachers renewed their certification for 10 years by going through a process designed to help them build on the ongoing and complex professional growth process that supports accomplished teaching.

The accomplishments were highlighted on Friday when Governor Neil Abercrombie offered his congratulations by proclaiming January 25, 2013 “Hawaii National Board Certified Teachers Day” in the State of Hawaii.
