The death of a Colorado man is being classified as a miscellaneous accident after he reportedly fell 20-25 feet from the Waihou Spring Trail on Maui.
The incident was reported at 11:37 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2 on the trail, located in the area of the Olinda Road Bird Sanctuary and county Experimental Forest.
A preliminary police investigation revealed that the man, identified as Lynn Wyatt Huff, 60, of Boulder, Colorado, appeared to have suffered possible head injuries in a fall from the rocky trail.
Police described the area as forested, with heavily saturated clay dirt, possibly due to rainy conditions throughout the week.
Upon arrival, officers met with the individual who reported the incident, and were directed towards the trail.
Officers walked about a mile down the trail towards the “springs,” and met with the victim’s wife who showed them the location of where her husband had fallen while hiking, said Maui Police Lt. Wayne Ibarra.
According to Lt. Ibarra, officers continued to hike down about a ½ mile to the bottom of the ravine to the river bed, and another ½ mile east through the river bed until they met with a female who was with the victim.
Officers on scene conducting a check of the victim reported that he was lifeless. Police say personnel from the Maui Fire Department and American Medical Response arrived shortly thereafter and provided assistance.
