Kahana Sunset Shoreline Improvements Proposed
By Wendy Osher
The Association of Apartment Owners at the Kahana Sunset condominium is proposing to construct a replacement seawall at the property, located on 4-and-a-half acres in West Maui.
The 79-unit condominium site currently has a 114-foot seawall and concrete stairway.
Under the plan, the old wall would be demolished, and a replacement seawall would be constructed mauka of the state designated shoreline, along with a new stairway approximately 30 feet inland from the existing stairs.
The proposed seawall is intended to protect existing structures, widen the beach, and prevent underlying soils from entering the ocean.
The drainage system improvements are proposed help to prevent sediments and pollutants from contaminating the marine environment.
The mitigation improvements are the result of a Master Plan for Strategic Retreat that was requested by the Maui Planning Commission as part of an SMA Emergency Permit granted to protect buildings on the property.
A 30-day period for public comment runs through March 11.
