Fire crews on Maui responded to a small fire near the water tank above the Maui Preparatory Academy campus in Napili shortly before 11 a.m. on Friday morning, officials said.

Authorities say the fire was located about a half mile above the intersection of Honoapiilani Highway and Hui A Road, and burned about 3,000 square feet of ironwood needles and light brush before being extinguished.

Maui Fire Capt. Paul Haake said crews were fortunate there were only light winds at the time, which did not hamper fire suppression activities.

He said the cause of the fire is unknown, but noted that there were workers in the area cutting brush along the fence line.

Officials say there were no monetary damages incurred by the fire.
