PBS Editor to Speak at “Digital Media Revolution” Event

The Maui Business Brainstormers will host Mark Glaser, executive editor of PBS MediaShift, at the “The Digital Media Revolution” event at The Fairmont Kea Lani on Tuesday, May 28.

Glaser is a freelance journalist whose career includes columns on hip-hop, reviews of videogames, travel stories, and humor columns that poked fun at leaders of technology.

He will talk about on how digital media has changed the world, with the rise of social media, to the loss of power by media moguls and traditional media. He will give four case studies of new media that have sprung up against the odds and become powerful forces in today’s culture.

According to their news release, one example that Glaser will use will be to outline the way that the Boston bombings manhunt played out online, with people following every detail on Twitter and doing their own fact-checking on sites such as Reddit.

Glaser will lay out his case, and then include the audience in a question and answer discussion to follow.

Glaser has reportedly written columns on the internet and technology for the Los Angeles Times, CNET and HotWired, and features for the New York Times, Conde Nast Traveler, Entertainment Weekly, the San Jose Mercury News, and many other publications.

He has also been a guest on PBS’ Newshour, NPR’s Talk of the Nation, KALW’s Media Roundtable and TechTV’s Silicon Spin. Glaser is a member of the Board of Trustees at the Fort Mason Center in San Francisco.

Maui Business Brainstormers is offering free admission to students that have teachers who will make their attendance of the event a study assignment.

The event will be held from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Fairmont Kea Lani on Tuesday, May 28, and the cost is $12 per person, with light pupus included.
