Parking at the Haleakalā Visitor Center on Maui will be reduced by 50% over a two week period to accommodate construction for handicapped accessibility improvements, officials said.

Construction will take place throughout the Summit District with work at the Haleakalā Visitor Center parking lot (near the summit) to run from May 20 through June 6, a park announcement stated.

During the work period, Park officials say spaces for vehicles and buses will be cut in half during sunrise and daylight hours, resulting in potential parking delays.

According to the NPS announcement, all vehicles must be cleared from marked construction zones before 6:45 a.m. on weekdays during the construction period.  Vehicles remaining after that time, will be ticketed and towed at the operator’s expense, authorities said.

Park officials say parking restrictions will be strictly enforced; and if feasible, vehicles will be redirected by park staff.
