Weekend: Dress Like a Flapper or Dance Your Way to Vegas

In the words of Dr. Suess, “How did it get so late so soon? It’s night before it’s afternoon. December is here before it’s June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?”

That’s right, peeps. Tomorrow dawns and June is upon us.

Welcome the start of a new month and the imminent return of summer with some of the events we’ve found for you here.

Best Reason to Be At the Mall on a Friday Night

Tonight from 7 to 8 p.m., Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner Mailani performs as part of a free monthly concert series at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center.

Mailani grew up in Kailua and is part of a musical family. She started singing at the age of two and taught herself ‘ukulele. It was at Maryknoll High School that she met Lei Melket with whom she later formed Keahiwai, one of the most popular female duos in Hawai’i.

In addition to the free concert, there will be prize giveaways and food and product sampling from merchants.

Head to Stella Blues for tonight’s Supper Club event with Erin Smith.

The Eastern Canadian singer and former Maui resident has relocated to Oahu, but will be here for an evening performance.

In the winter of 2012, Smith received an opportunity to travel to Montreal and record a solo album. That album, “Best Disaster,” showcases her indie rock sound and is set to be released this summer. Our guess is you might get to hear some tunes from it tonight.

At 6 p.m., enjoy dinner and the show for $60 or take in the show only for $30 at 7:30 p.m.

Best Reason to Live, Laugh, and/or Hula

Halau Kekuaokala’au’ala’iliahi presents “LIVE, LAUGH, HULA!” on Saturday at the Baldwin High School Auditorium.

The event is a fundraiser for the halau’s trip to the Queen Lili’uokalani Keiki Hula Competition in July.

Entertainment includes Frank DeLima, Da Braddahs, Uluwehi Guerrero and Halau Hula Kauluokala. There will also be food, arts and crafts, and a silent auction. Festivities begin at 3 p.m. and the stage show starts at 6 p.m.

Tickets are $20 per person.

Tomorrow night at Casanova in Makawao it’s “Gatsby! A Roaring 1920s Ragtime Ball.”

Pull out your fringe, feathers, and fedoras and shimmy on over for a night of prohibition-inspired indulgence.

Performances by Kit Kat Club Cabaret, Trevor Arnholt, Rachel Deboer, and Sasanna Babshoff promise an evening of burlesque dancing and body décor. There will also be costume and dance contests and fusion dance beats by by DJ Scott Provonsha.

The event starts at 9:30 p.m. Cover is $10 with costume or $15 without.

Best Reason to Shake What Your Mama Gave Ya

It’s the 5th annual Summer Shake Down at Lulus Lahaina on Saturday.

There is no cover charge all night and “insane” drink specials at the bar.

There is also a summer shake down dance contest, and the grand prize winner gets an all expense paid trip for two to Las Vegas.

DJ Big Mike & DJ Kamikaze will be spinning all your favorite hits and you can also look forward to “Philly Blunt on hype control.” (We’ll leave that one to you to translate.)

Best Artsy Fartsy Opportunity

The “Photography Passion and Risk” exhibit at the MACC’s Schaefer International Gallery features photographers Ed Goldstein, Miki Nitadori and Bruna Stude.

“America Hand Made” follows Ed Goldstein’s fascination with traditional tools is explored in his “America Handmade” show.

“71%” by Bruna Stude utilizes old school chemically developed film as a medium to explore her love of the ocean.

Lastly, Miki Nitadori’s Japanese heritage inspired her “Reflect” series.

The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The exhibit is free to the public.
