Brush Fire Burns 1/2 Acre Behind Kahului Kmart

A small brush fire in Kahului on Saturday night burned a half acre of dry grass and thick shrubbery off of the Hāna Highway behind Kmart, fire officials said.

The fire was first reported at 10:06 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2013, and was called under control at 11:13 p.m., said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.  He said the fire was called extinguished at 12:04 this morning.

Crews responding to the scene included fire fighters from Kahului, Kīhei, and Wailuku, as well as a tanker from the Maui Department of Public Works, officials said.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire was undetermined after investigation, said FS Chief Mainaga.
