2nd Annual Kraig Vickers Honor Run
By Wendy Osher
The 2nd Annual Kraig Vickers Honor Run is planned for Aug. 4, at Kanahā Beach Park in Kahului.
Event organizer Brianne Savage says the run honors Maui’s Kraig MK Vickers, an EOD member of the US Navy’s Special Warfare Development group, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on Aug. 6 of 2011, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
“Kraig, along with 21 other members of his unit and an additional nine US service members, were all killed when their Chinook CH-47 Helicopter was shot down by insurgents while engaged in combat operations,” the announcement recalls.
The 5K Run and 3K run/walk is in honor of both Vickers and other military personnel with ties to the island of Maui and state of Hawaii.
The 5K starts at 7:30 a.m. at the entrance to Kanahā Beach Park, proceeds east towards Spreckelsville, and loops back to a finish at Kanahā.
The 3K will also start at 7:45 a.m. at the entrance to Kanahā, and will follow the same route as the 5K, turning around halfway at a designated aid station.
Early registration continues until midnight, July 26, at a reduced cost of $20 for military and $25 for non-military adults (12 and under is $15). Online registration ([email protected]) will be accepted until midnight, Aug. 2. Registration will also be accepted on race day at 6 a.m., at a cost of $35 for adults, $30 for military and members of VIRR, and $20 for youth 12 and under.
Event organizers say entertainment will be provided following the run, along with random draw door prizes and snack foods for race participants.
