The Maui of County Civil Defense agency announced the availability of shelters for those needing protection or refuge from the storm.
Authorities say the facilities will be open at 9 a.m.
Shelters include:
- War Memorial Gymnasium
- Lahaina Civic Center
- Kamaliʻi Elementary School
- Hannibal Tavares (Pukalani) Community Center
- Hāna High School
- Lānaʻi High School
- Molokaʻi High School
- Kilohana Community Center
The Salvation Army in Lahaina, Maui also announced the availability of another shelter serving West Maui. The Salvation Army shelter opened its doors at 9 a.m. Officials say water and food is prepared and ready for distribution to the community, should the need arise at this facility only.
War Memorial, Lahaina Civic and Kamalii Elementary have been designated as pet-friendly shelters.
County officials say people must bring their own evacuation kits to the shelters as there will be no services provided.
“Shelters are meant to provide individuals and families a safe place to evacuate if directed to do so by officials or if your home is vulnerable to high winds or flooding. Do not use the shelters if you have other options,” county officials said in a press release.
IMPORTANT: For those bring pets, they must be contained in a kennel or carrying case, and bring their own pet supplies.
