Maui police and fire units responded to a house fire reported this morning on Kakae Place in the Oceanview Estates subdivision between Lower Waiehu Beach Road and the Kahekili Highway.

We have unconfirmed reports from residents of the area who say the incident may have involved the use of a gun.

Maui Police Lt. William Juan said he could not confirm the reports at this time, but would release information as soon as it becomes available.

The house fire was reported at 6:21 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at a single-family residence located at 1364 Kakae Place, said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

Units arrived on scene at 6:26 a.m., and brought the fire under control by 7:11 a.m., said FS Chief Mainaga.

Lt. Jayson Rego with the Maui Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division said an investigation is ongoing at this time. Fire officials also have investigators on the scene.

At 7:42 a.m., police issued an advisory saying Kakae Place is closed at Hoauna Street. By 9:27 a.m., Kakae Place was reopened.

At around 11:30 a.m., fire and police investigators remained on scene.  Police were seen loading several bags with unknown contents into the back of an animal rescue truck.

The home was cordoned off with police tape and officers were stationed outside the home as the investigation continues.
