A six-year old boy was found safe after his mother reported him missing about a half hour earlier near the Whalers condominium complex in Kāʻanapali on Friday afternoon.

Rescue crews had launched a land and water search at around 12:45 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, following reports that the boy was last seen at the water’s edge.

The search was terminated at around 1:15 p.m., after a woman bystander saw the child and got the attention of both Maui police and fire fighting personnel, said Maui Fire Service Chief Lee Mainaga.

According to FS Chief Mainaga, the boy, from Orland, California, was found on the beach fronting the Marriott Maui Ocean Club after word spread that the child was missing.

He was reunited with his parent, and the search was called off just as the department was preparing to launch an air unit to assist in the search.
