Upon arrival, firefighters found a 55-gallon drum tipped on its side, with approximately 15-gallons of used motor oil on the ground, according to department reports.

“The perpetrators tried to ignite the barrel with cardboard,” said Maui Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.

The barrel, located about 4-feet away from the main entrance, did not burn and the building did not sustain any damages, according to FS Mainaga.

The second incident was reported at 7:02 a.m. at Building Portable 1 at the Maui High School campus.

The second fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damage to the structure, and the cause was attributed to “incendiary devices found at the scene,” said FS Mainaga,

No injuries were reported during either incident, but both remain under investigation.
