Motorists Attempting to Pass Kahakuloa Roadwork

Crews from the Public Works/Highways Division on Maui say a number of motorists have attempted to drive through the Kahakuloa work area, which is closed daily for road resurfacing.

Those that attempt to pass may have to reverse long distances on an incline, according to County Communications Specialist Lois Whitney.

The department has indicated, “a high number of drivers, primarily visitors, have been attempting to drive around the island through Kahakuloa. Many have driven into closed areas clearly marked ‘Do Not Enter.'”

As a reminder to motorists, road resurfacing work began on Monday, and is ongoing in the Kahakuloa area.

Road closures are in effect daily between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. between mile 11 and 13.4 of the Kahekili Highway. Traffic from the Wailuku direction will not be allowed to continue to Kahakuloa Village during work hours; and traffic from Lahaina will be allowed up to the Kaukini Gallery, but not past the gallery.

The entire length of the project runs nearly three miles along the Kahekili Highway from the Kahakuloa Bridge to the Wailena Gulch. County crews anticipate completion of the entire $500,000 project by April 30, 2014.
