Fast-Track Kahoma Village Project Update

The Maui County Council’s Land Use Committee meeting relating to the proposed fast-track affordable housing project at Kahoma Village is in recess, and is scheduled to reconvene at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014.

Committee Vice-Chair Don Guzman made the announcement on Wednesday night following a public meeting that included oral testimony from 19 individuals.

The seven hour meeting also included deliberations in which members posed questions to representatives of county departments and the project developer; and discussion of proposed exemptions, modifications and project desirability, according to an announcement from the Office of Council Services.

“I want to thank the many members of the public, and area residents in particular, the departments and the developer, for providing the committee with substantial information to assist us in our deliberations,” said Guzman in a government press release. “As always, the committee’s challenge is to synthesize the information and come to a decision it feels will best serve the community’s interest,” he said.

The meeting is scheduled to reconvene at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, in the Council Chamber, on the 8th floor of the Kalana O Maui building in Wailuku.

The project calls for 203 residential units, with 51% of the units meeting the county’s affordability criteria. The project also includes three private parks totaling 1.75 acres.

Under the proposal the project is seeking fast-track consideration, in which the county is required to act by February 13, 2014.
