Washington Man Pulled From Ocean at Honolua Bay

A visitor from Washington State died after being pulled from waters at Honolua Bay where he was snorkeling on Saturday.

Maui police have since identified the man as Alan Southard, 58, of Puyallup, Washington.

According to police reports, bystanders noticed the man in distress at around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2014, and pulled him to shore, where they began cardio pulmonary resuscitation.

Police say that when first responders arrived on scene, they transported Southard to the Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

Southard later died at the hospital, according to police reports.

The cause of death is unknown pending autopsy results, and the case has been classified as a miscellaneous accident.
