Guzman Proposes “Adopt-A-Park” Volunteer Policy
By Maui Now Staff
A bill seeking the implementation of a park volunteer policy for Maui County comes up for review before the council’s Economic Development, Energy, Agriculture and Recreation Committee on Tuesday.
Council member Don Guzman who chairs the committee said the policy would “provide opportunities for volunteers and donors to maintain, preserve, beautify and improve county playing fields and parks, including beaches.”
“I’ve received an overwhelming amount of requests from park users for opportunities to give back and provide care for the park facilities they utilize,” said Guzman in a committee meeting press release announcement.
“Having the ability for organizations to adopt a park under the guidance of the Parks Department, will instill a sense of pride and responsibility among members of the community,” he said.
Under the bill, guiding components as well as application and reporting requirements would be established. The bill also provides for the appointment of a park volunteer coordinator.
Testimony will be accepted at the meeting which begins at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, in the Council Chamber.
