Big wave surfers were in for a treat this week with several days of Pe’ahi “Jaws” size surf. The first Pe’ahi swell swept in over the weekend and surfers were out charging on Sunday Dec. 7, 2014. A new northwest swell filled in on Monday bringing waves to Pe’ahi on Tuesday Dec. 9, 2014. Yet another northwest swell peaked on Wednesday Dec. 10 at heights of up to 35 foot faces (or more) for Jaws. Thursday wave heights were still up early in the day before beginning to slowly fade later in the day and through Friday.
A High Surf Warning was issued by the National Weather Service for the time period of Tuesday through Thursday afternoon.
The NWS advises the public to expect ocean water occasionally sweeping across portions of beaches, very strong breaking waves and strong longshore and rip currents. Large breaking surf, significant shore break and dangerous currents will make entering the water very hazardous. Boaters should be aware of an increased number of surfers in the water and dangerous conditions entering and leaving harbors.
