New Jersey Visitor Pulled from Waters at Kāʻanapali in Critical Condition

President’s Day ended up being a busy day in the water for Maui rescue crews, with three ocean deaths and a critical injury reported over a two hour period.

The first incident involved the apparent drowning of two Kahului teens in waters near Honokōhau Bay; and the death of a 53-year-old visitor who was found floating lifeless in waters fronting the Mākena Beach and Golf Resort in South Maui on Monday afternoon, Feb. 16, 2015.
Also on Monday, a visitor from Colts Neck, New Jersey, was transported to the hospital in critical condition after being found floating face down in waters fronting the Kāʻanapali Beach Resort in West Maui.
The incident was reported at 3:32 p.m. when bystanders observed a male floating face down in the water and pulled him to shore.

Firefighters and paramedics performed life saving measures and the individual was eventually transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, said Acting Fire Services Officer Edward Taomoto.

Crews responding to the incident included firefighters from Kahului and Kīhei.
