The MACC to Present Maori Stories in ‘The Brave’
By Maui Now Staff
Maui Arts & Cultural Center will present a premier New Zealand theater company performance entitled “The Brave” at Castle Theater on Thursday, Mar. 5, at 7:30 p.m.
Combining real confessions with raw athleticism, “The Brave” follows eight men who have written letters to important people who are, once were or maybe never were in their lives. The letters trigger a floodgate of untold stories and survival tactics, echoing the ultimate message for the modern Maori male—“man up.”
TheatreScenes calls the production “… a rare show that’s able to cut through and grab you on a deeply personal level.”
A review by TheatreView commented: “… their stories strip away the layers of self and put very human stories and heart out there for us to admire and respect.”
The Auckland-based “Massive Company” is New Zealand’s leading theater company, presenting experimental works by emerging and professional performing artists.
Led by Artistic Director Sam Scott, a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, the company has been devising and collaborating with leading playwrights for 22 years, and creates work that acknowledges and recognizes individual stories.
Tickets for the show are $12, $25 and $35, plus applicable fees. Call the MACC Box Office at 242-SHOW (7469) Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., or book online.
