Shipman’s Triple Sparks Seabury Hall Girls’ Victory

And now for a word about Ava Shipman, Seabury Hall’s answer for the departure of the state’s most formidable running duo in the history of Hawaii track and field.
On Saturday, the sophomore middle-distance runner gave the Spartans a much-needed boost, and the rest of the Maui Interscholastic League an early-season preview of what’s to come the next three years.
Shipman executed a rare triple at the finals of the 62nd annual Yamamoto Invitational, winning the girls 1,500-, 800- and 3,000-meter runs, and then capping off the team title by anchoring the Spartans’ winning 4 x 400-meter relay.
Seabury girls won its fifth straight Yamamoto championship, which began with the school’s first ever team title in the sport in 2011. The Spartans outscored runner-up Baldwin, 125 to 89. Oak Bay finished third with 72 points, followed by Kamehameha Maui’s 40.

Gone are Dakota Grossman and Alyssa Bettendorf, two of the sport’s most decorated female athletes, and certainly the most accomplished runners to ever compete in the MIL.
Grossman, a 10-time state champion, now runs distance races for the Utes in Utah and Bettendorf, the 2014 Gatorade Hawaii Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year, is a freshman sprinter with the Bears of Northern Colorado.
“Dakota’s really the only one to triple and then run the 4 x 400,” said Seabury Hall head coach Bobby Grossman, comparing his daughter with the up-and-coming Shipman. “And for her to do it as a sophomore is really special. She started off as an ‘OK’ athlete and she’s turning out to be the star of the team.”
The Spartans’ track program reached its zenith last year when the little school from Upcountry Maui stole the spotlight from state, perennial powerhouse Punahou, 73 to 34, en route to earning the MIL’s first girls state track and field championship. Bettendorf-Grossman accounted for 62 1/2 points.

Although seniors Christy Fell and Kiana Smith are back, the majority of the 2015 team is made up of sophomores — many of whom are first-time track athletes.

As if the program did not skip a beat, Shipman didn’t just win Saturday, she won like a seasoned veteran, finishing the 1,500 in 5 minutes, 4.14 seconds. She came back seven events later to win the 800 in 2:29.28, before locking down the 3,000 in 11:17.82.
“I don’t think you can name an athlete, other than Dakota, in the history of the MIL, who has run the 1,500, 800, 3,000 and then the 4 x 4. That just doesn’t happen.”
On top of that, Grossman said, “She ran a 5:04 in the 1,500 last night, so I was pretty happy with that, she PR’d. She was able to run under 2:30 again in the 800 and she did all this by herself.”
The Spartans have produced its share of state champion girls over the last 15 years, from Brittany Young, to Tia Ferguson, to Haley Grossman, to Dakota Grossman, and now Ava Shipman?

Well, as long as we are comparing, Grossman said: “Haley didn’t do it, Tia didn’t do it. Tia probably would have been able to do it, but she didn’t have a relay team. And Haley didn’t do it until she was older, so for Ava to come out from last year right into this year and to become that next Dakota-type of athlete, where you are able to run those types of events, is unheard of.”

To keep her motivated, Grossman has Shipman running with the boys.
“Just to keep things competitive, but on long runs she’s kind of on her own. And as far as her pace work, for someone who’s only a sophomore, it’s kind of strange for her to be out there right now as the lead distance runner — boy or girl.”
Best of all, Grossman says, Shipman listens.
“As an 8th grader, she was running kind of flat-footed and even last year she would run on her heels a lot and she’s made herself run on the balls’ of her feet and she gets cramps in her calves from it now and she’s starting to get stronger.

“When you see her on the track during practice, you see everyone standing around and you see her jogging. She’s bought into all the things we’re doing and she works hard. You have to have someone on your team that other people can look at — and not just because they’re good, but because they are doing the right things.”
“So for me, it was real important to have her be that person,” Grossman added.
“This is a big story for her. Last year as a freshman she was 12th in the 3,000 at state. There’s 12 finalists in the 3,000 and she was last and she hated it. So it was probably good that she had that happen to her. She ran 11:15 at states and she was able to run 11:17 — by herself, after already running the 1,500 and 800.
“She’s definitely improved a lot this year and she’s doing really well when you compare her times with the other top runners in the state.”
Grossman hopes that Shipman will become a household name by the time Ava graduates, but meanwhile, he says: “I’m hoping other athletes will follow her lead in the future, not just in track but also in cross country.”
“She knows she’s not going to get anything for free and that she has to do the right things and also be a good person, then I can see her being the face of our running community at Seabury.”

Other outstanding performances in the girls division:
* Baldwin’s Kaitlin Smith was the meet’s only four-event winner. The sophomore won gold in the girls long jump (17-6 3/4), triple jump (34-9 1/2), 100 hurdles (16.09), and 300 hurdles (50.16).
* Kihei Charter’s Maya Reynolds won the girls 100 (12.91), 200 (27.10), and 400 (60.85).
