Committee Chair Don Couch proposed language in the plan to highlight the preservation of Lānaʻi’s scenic sites and resources.

“It was clear residents wanted to preserve Lanai’s scenic landscapes and character,” Couch said in a press release statement. “The committee’s challenge is to make sure policies are in place to address Lānaʻi’s projected growth in 20 years, without losing its distinct country-town charm.”

The plan also outlines actions and strategies for the community including the exploration of options for alternate access in and out of Mānele during emergencies.

Language added to the plan describes the general intent of proposed development to diversify the island’s economy: “Future development is anticipated to create more business and job opportunities both within and outside the tourism industry.”

Couch said future projects such as resort development plans and affordable housing construction are relying on the expansion of water sources.
