The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a special weather advisory for hot temperatures and high humidity for the islands this weekend.

The remnant of Tropical Storm Ela will move west across the islands over the weekend, bringing light winds and dew points in the mid 70s in combination with typically hot July temperatures. This combination will produce afternoon heat indices near 100 degrees.

Stronger winds and lower humidity will spread over the area early next week.

The heat index, also called apparent temperature, is based on studies of skin cooling caused by the evaporation of perspiration.

The heat index is higher when high air temperatures occur with high humidity, and lower when they occur with low humidity.
