Waiehu Home Fire Causes $70 K Damage

Two people displaced by a fire at a Waiehu home on Tuesday that resulted in an estimated $70,000 in damage, fire officials said.
The incident was reported at around 11:12 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at a single-story residence on Kilou Street.
Wailuku firefighters arrived at 11:21 a.m. to find smoke coming from the rear portion of the home, and were able to contain the fire to the room of origin about four minutes later. According to department reports, the fire was called extinguished at 12:50 p.m.
Fire officials say a female occupant reported smelling smoke in the house and evacuated the home after walking into a room used as a business office and finding the air conditioning unit on fire. Fire officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Maui Fire Services Officer Edward Taomoto said the two people who live at the home have been temporarily displaced and are being assisted by friends and neighbors.
Damages were estimated at $50,000 to the structure and $20,000 to its contents.
Three fire crews from Wailuku and Kahului responded to the incident.
