Ask the Mayor: When is the Household Hazardous Materials Collection Event?
Mayor Alan Arakawa answers some of the most-asked questions submitted to his office staff.
Hi Mr. Mayor,
Q: I read about the household hazardous waste collection event in The Maui News, but you didn’t cite a location. When I looked at the county calendar, I noticed an event that happens some Saturdays, but it didn’t require making an appointment. Is this the same type of recycling event?
A: No, this is not a recycling event, it is a household hazardous materials collection event that will be held on Nov. 21 and 22 only.
You’re right, the location was not included in the previous response because that information is disclosed at the time an appointment is made to discourage unwanted and illegal dumping of household and especially hazardous materials. Such dumping is not only bad for the county workers who have to clean up the mess, it’s bad for the environment.
Residents wanting to participate in this free collection event can call the contractor, EnviroServices, at toll-free (855) 325-3222 to schedule an appointment. Remember that a list of household hazardous materials must be provided at the time the appointment is made, and commercial waste will not be accepted.
For information on how to recycle other household materials, visit www.mauicounty.gov/Recycle and click on “Maui Recycling Guide.”
