Nāpili Man Suffers Fatal Injuries in Jeep Crash at Honolua

A Nāpili man suffered fatal injuries in a Jeep crash on the Honoapiʻilani Highway on Monday night.

The incident was reported near mile post 34 of the Honoapiʻilani Highway in Honolua at around 10:08 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 2, 2015.

According to police reports, the crash occurred as a white 1991 Jeep Wrangler, traveling north on the highway, left the roadway on the right shoulder and struck an embankment.

Police say the Jeep then veered back onto the roadway, crossed both lanes of travel, and overturned on the makai side shoulder.

Police say the driver, later identified as Adam Newkirk, 34, was ejected from his vehicle and sustained fatal injuries.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Newkirk was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

Police say the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

This was the 20th traffic fatality on Maui County roads in 2015, compared to 19 at the same time last year.
