Mossman to Moderate Naʻi Aupuni Event Wednesday

Retired 2nd Circuit Court judge, Boyd Mossman, will moderate the Naʻi Aupuni Native Hawaiian forum on Wednesday, Nov. 11, in Central Maui.

Mossman, who served Maui County for three decades, will facilitate the informational session and candidate panel set to run from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Queen Liliʻuokalani Children’s Center, Col. David M. Peters Building.

The event includes a presentation portion without audience input from 6 to 8 p.m; and a question-and-answer period will follow from 8 to 9 p.m. Organizers said the forum aims to provide information and clarification, versus debate of issues.

Leading the informational session will be Puanani Danner, chairwoman of the Sovereign Councils of the Hawaiian Homelands Assembly, or SCHHA, and Michelle Kaʻuhane, president and chief executive officer of the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, or CNHA.

Naʻi Aupuni refers to a 40-day convention set from February through April 2016 to create a governance document, or constitution, for an eventual Native Hawaiian sovereign entity.

Fourteen Maui candidates are seeking election to three delegate seats to sit on the constitutional convention, or con-con.  Elections are ongoing now through Nov. 30 by mail-in ballot.

Event organizers invited all 14 candidates to attend the Nov. 11 panel.  They will be asked to introduce themselves and to share how they perceive their roles as delegates.
