The 3rd annual Hawaiian Electric Companies Hawaiʻi VEX State Middle School Championship will be held on O‘ahu on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, from 8:50 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Twenty-two Hawai‘i middle schools, including Lokelani Intermediate School in Kīhei, will participate in the robotics competition.

Teams will control their robots to participate in various skills challenges, demonstrating the students’ grasp of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) concepts.

The 2015-2016 VEX Game Challenge, Nothing But Net, pits an alliance of two teams (red and blue) in timed matches on a 12-by-12-foot playing field.

The object of the game is to attain a higher score than the opposing alliance by maneuvering the robots—in autonomous or driver-controlled play—to move colored balls across the field and into a net, as well as elevating an opposing team’s robot, in order to score points.
