Department of Water Supply Warns of Phone ScamMarch 31, 2016, 1:20 PM HST · Updated March 31, 1:20 PM 0 Comments
The Maui Department of Water Supply is warning customers of a fraudulent phone scam in which an unauthorized person is posing as a DWS representative.
Department officials say the caller claims a DWS account has an outstanding balance and states that if the customer does not pay, their water supply will be shut off.
The impersonator then instructs the customer to go to the Walmart Money Center to transfer funds to cover the balance.
When receiving a phone call from a DWS representative, department officials say that in no circumstance will the representative require a customer to go to Walmart to transfer funds.
Water bill payments are accepted on the second floor of the Kalana O Maui “County Building,” the Service Center at Maui Mall, and the DWS baseyards in Lahaina, Hāna, and Molokaʻi. More information is available on the second page of monthly water bills.
Customers who receive suspicious calls regarding water bill payment should contact the DWS Fiscal/Customer Service Office at (808) 270-7730 and the Maui Police Department.
