Three teams from the girls division scored over 100 points at the Maui Interscholastic League Junior Varsity Track and Field Championships last Friday, pushing back the outcome in the team standings to the final event of the meet — the 4 x 400 relay.

That’s where the third-place Seabury Hall relay team secured its championship fate over Baldwin and Maui high schools. The Spartans earned six points in the relay to finish the meet with 114, compared to Baldwin’s fourth-place finish in the relay and 111 total. A second-place finish in the relay gave third-place Maui High 100 points.

Maui High’s resurgence in the girls division is directly related to the monster season freshman Alyssa Mae Antolin is having. A leg injury from two weeks ago, kept the Saber soccer-first player out of the 400.

She did, however, dominate the two other shorter sprints, winning the 100 in 12.73 seconds and the 200 in 26.36.

Antolin still owns the best MIL qualifying time in the 100 at 12.57 and the 200 in 25.97. Both of her marks rank her No. 2 in the state. She is also No. 4 in the 400 at 60.18.

The Saber 9th-grader already ranks among the best ever female sprinters from her school. As it stands, only Alana Seabury has run faster than Antolin, establishing school records and personal best marks in the 100 (12.52) and 200 (25.90) before graduating in 2010.

The Lady Bears had only two event winners with Angelle Ferge topping the girls 100-meter high hurdles (17.65) and Anela Ramos won the discus in 91-1. Meanwhile, Baldwin’s Sela Panuve added 24 points with three runner-up finishes in the 400, 200 and triple jump.

Seabury Hall had five event winners, including double victors Maile Dougherty in the triple jump and 400, and Darby Mulligan in the 1,500 and 3,000. Mulligan also placed third in the 800 and scored 26 individual points.

Dougherty matched Mulligan’s point total, and teammate Chloe Gangnath won the 800, finished second in the 1,500, and third in the 3,000.

“I’m not completely surprised we won, but I feel like it was a surprising performance by our team,” said Seabury Hall girls head coach Bobby Grossman. “We had only seven girls and we knew that four of them were going to score the majority of the points.

“To only win the meet by three points and to have it come down to the 1,600 relay, made it a really exciting event for all of us.”

The Baldwin boys continued to dominate the sport, going unbeaten in championship scoring meets here on the Valley Isle for more than a decade.

The Bears’ top young gun, hurdler/sprinter Rey Cadiz, ran away from the field with a winning time of 15.98 in the 110 highs and 44.09 in the 300 intermediates.

Cadiz is the MIL’s most promising young hurdler since Ro Wilson of Baldwin was a freshman in 2007.

Baldwin won seven individual events and both relays. The Bears’ freshman Kolbe Fontanilla beat Maui High’s Kawika Fernandez in the 1,500 first and then later in the 800.

Other meet highlights were double-event winners:

* Kihei Charter’s Andrew Lawson in the 100 and 200.

* The Lahainaluna boys scored 66 points in the field events, earning victories in the discus throw (Koa Evalu-Robinson), the long jump (Haaheo Au), and the high jump (Isaiah Tanner). The Lunas finished 1-2 in the long jump and the high jump.
