Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa Appoints Cultural Advisor
The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa has appointed Jack Stone to its newly created position of cultural advisor for the resort.
Stone returns to the Sheraton Maui ‘ohana, where he worked in 2005 as director of housekeeping.
As cultural advisor, Stone will guide the resort’s cultural programs, celebrations and activities.
Since starting in March, he has created new offerings to teach guests about ancient Hawai‘i through traditions such as coconut husking, taro pounding, bamboo stamping, lei making, hula dancing, ‘ukulele lessons and more.
“We created the role of cultural advisor as another way to celebrate our resort’s rich history and iconic location at Pu‘u Keka‘a—Black Rock,” said Tetsuji Yamazaki, general manager for the resort. “We are thrilled to have Jack as part of our ‘ohana to share the spirit of aloha and teach guests about all things Hawaiian.”
Stone has a true love for Hawaiian culture and music. Guests will see him around property, strumming his ‘ukulele, talking story with guests and visitors and carting the “Aloha Wagon,” which he brings with him to conduct the resort’s daily cultural activities.
“I hope to bring awareness and increase knowledge of this wahi pana, or special story place, Sheraton Maui, for all guests and visitors to our resort,” said Stone.
Stone began his work with Starwood Hotels & Resorts at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa in 2000, serving as steward supervisor before being promoted to housekeeping manager in 2001. He also held roles at the Westin Maui as recreation manager and director of fun.
In 2012, Stone was the Hawaiian cultural advisor and recreation manager at Marriott Maui Ocean Club. Most recently, he worked in Las Vegas at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Spa as housekeeping manager.
Born and raised on the island of Moloka‘i, Stone is passionate about his family, the environment, sustainability and living pono.
