East Maui Man Still Missing After Nine Months
Family members of East Maui resident Billy Oliveira have renewed their plea for help in locating him, in the hopes that new information will surface in the case that has seen little if any movement since it was first reported. Wednesday, April 13, 2016, marked the nine month anniversary of Billy’s disappearance. He was last seen Monday July 13, 2015 in the Nāhiku area of East Maui.
Billy’s cousin, Amy Yamada tells us the last foot search was done in September/October that included three searches covering the area from Kīpahulu to Kanaio. While a few sightings have been reported, none have been confirmed, according to Yamada.
According to Yamada, the Maui Search and Rescue group continues to support the family in their ongoing efforts to find Billy. “We are trying to find a direction to go in. Being (that) Kīpahulu to Kanaio was pretty much covered, we want to go from Nāhiku to Haʻikū, but it would be quite and undertaking,” said Yamada. “We tried to set up search parties but it either rained too much or the scheduling just didn’t work for us,” she said.
“At this point we know that it’s been a long time and it will be difficult to search, but we have to try…we just keep hoping and praying that someone will come forward or some evidence will surface,” said Yamada.
Administrators of the Help Us Find Billy Oliveira Facebook page wrote:
“For the family and friends, and those of you who have been following this page, you know that there is nothing new to share. It kills me every time I type that…NOTHING has come up in this case…So I am writing now – 9 months later – Begging and pleading with anyone reading this. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE HELP US! IF YOU HAVE ANY INFORMATION AT ALL THAT WILL HELP US FIND BILLY, PLEASE COME FORWARD!”
Page administrators also made a new flyer and have renewed their efforts in the hopes that answers will surface. Family members commented saying, “Our family would greatly appreciate if you could help us spread the word that he is still missing and we are still searching for him, or answers to what happened to him.”
According to our previous reports, Yamada said the night Oliveira went missing, car lights were reportedly seen coming up the driveway. While it was initially assumed the vehicle belonged to a family member, that was quickly ruled out through checks with relatives and phone records. At the time, police said they did not suspect foul play. Maui Now requested an update from Maui police on Thursday afternoon, but no new information was available at the time of this posting. (We will update if additional details are received).
Oliveira is now 40-years-old, and is described as standing 5’11” tall, weighing 180 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Police say he was last seen wearing blue jeans, a black jacket, unknown color t-shirt, and running shoes. He has a scar on his right shoulder blade, but no distinguishing tattoos.
