No. 2 Baldwin downed No. 5 Pearl City, 5-1, Saturday night to claim the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division I State Baseball Championships behind the combined four-hitter of freshman Kaipo Haole and junior Nigel Mayfield before a packed home crowd at Maehara Stadium.

The Bears (18-0) are the first team to finish a perfect regular and postseason since Waiakea went 20-0 after beating the Bears for the state title (5-2) in 2012. The win marked Baldwin’s first state title in 21 years and fifth overall.

The victory was extra special as Baldwin head coach Jon Viela recently accepted the athletic director’s job at Kamehameha Schools Maui. The long-time Bears coach spent the last 10 years as the head skipper and leaves with a 135-31 record.

Haole, who pitched all of nine innings before the title game, allowed a run and four hits with one strikeout in four innings. Mayfield retired nine of the 10 batters he faced in the last three innings to earn the save.

Baldwin captain Kawena Alo-Kaonohi, who was chosen the tournament’s most outstanding player, told ScoringLive.com that the team had confidence in the freshman.
