Kuana Torres Kahele to Perform at The Shops

Multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award Winner Kuana Torres Kahele will hold a free concert on Wednesday, May 18, beginning at 6:30 p.m. during the Wailea Le‘a event at The Shops at Wailea’s fountain courtyard.

Hilo-born Kahele is well known for his singing, songwriting and genre-bending creativity that has garnered him multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards.

He comes from a revered lineage of Hawaiian musicians, including Bill Aliiloa Lincoln, Victor Kala, the Lim Family and George Holokai.

Kahele will feature music from his new album, Pi’ilani Maui – Music for the Hawaiian Islands Vol.3.

He continues to produce tracks in the spirit of Hawai‘i and his new album promises more of the same.

In 1991, Kahele was taken under the wing of Kumu Hula and Composer Johnny Lum Ho. Lum Ho was an inspiration to Kahele’s songwriting and provided him with a crash course in Hawaiian music when Lum Ho made him a permanent musician for his Hālau Ka Ua Kani Lehua. Kahele credits much of his current success to the mentorship and aloha they all showed him at an early age.

Kahele’s musical history also includes connecting with Kehau Tamure to form the multi-award winning Na Palapalai. Together, they gained critical acclaim for reviving Hawaiian classics, in addition to their original compositions, new to the industry.

They continue to maintain a prominent presence in both the local and international hula and Hawaiian music scene; even to this day, Kahele’s original, Ke Anu O Waimea is the most popular hula song in Japan, where there are over 10,000 hula hālau groups.

An enhancement to this memorable performance will include menu samplings from the center’s restaurants and eateries—Tommy Bahama Restaurant, Lappert’s Ice Cream and Honolulu Cookie Company.

The evening’s festivities end at 8 p.m.

For this event, four-hour parking is offered for $5; proceeds will go to Hospice Maui.
