Maui firefighters responded to a report of a fire along the Mokulele Highway on Friday afternoon, May 20, 2016.  The incident was reported shortly before 3:45 p.m. on the side of the highway, across from the National Guard building and race track.  Witnesses tell us they were able to put out the fire by using a piece of scrap metal on side of road to rack the grass and put down flame.

Two additional witnesses stopped and used water bottles to completely extinguish it.  Witnesses tell us the likely cause of the fire was a thrown cigarette butt; however there is no official word from authorities on the cause.
